What To Do This Winter In Myrtle Beach

Nights Of A Thousand Candles - Myrtle Beach Winter Activities Most people think “summer vacation” when they think of Myrtle Beach, but there are plenty of families who visit in the winter months as well. People visit family members during the holidays and many just want to escape the inevitable snowstorms destined for the northern states. If your family is going to be staying at Dunes Village resort this winter, here are a few things you may want to check out during your stay.

Holiday activities

Like most cities, Myrtle Beach has a plethora of holiday activities going on throughout the winter months. One of the most popular among both locals and visitors has to be Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens where guests walk through the beautiful gardens and sculptures, which are lit and decorated. Another festive attraction is Ripley’s Festival of Trees at the Ripley’s Aquarium where there are tons of beautifully decorated Christmas trees for each state in the U.S., with an extra large tree for South Carolina representing much of what makes our state great.

In early December there will be Christmas Parades in North Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet complete with floats, music and much more.

Closing out the holiday season will be a variety of New Years Eve Celebrations. For families with small children, The South Carolina Children’s Museum will be having a “Noon years eve” party filled with games, crafts and a balloon drop held at noon on Dec 31st. For adults looking to have a more traditional New Year’s Eve party there is Southern Times Square at Market Common, which features bands, beer gardens and a ball drop!

Holiday festivities are not the only popular winter activities in Myrtle Beach. Many golfers make their annual trip to Myrtle Beach during the winter months for cheaper rates. Since South Carolina rarely sees snow in the winter, golf courses can stay open for most days even when it’s cold. When northern golf shuts down for the winter, golfers will come south and keep their seasons alive.

With the holidays quickly approaching, winter is the time to get some shopping done. Since it may be a little too chilly to spend hours on the beach, take the opportunity to be productive and get presents for the loved ones in your life. Myrtle Beach has plenty o places to find those perfect gifts.

Tanger Outlets has two locations in Myrtle Beach, one on Hwy 501 and another on Hwy 17. While there are a few of the same stores, these two outlet malls are very different and it’s worth shopping both.

If it’s too cold for the outlets, Myrtle Beach also has indoor malls like Coastal Grand Mall on Bypass 17 and the Myrtle Beach Mall on N. Kings Hwy near Tanger Outlets and Walmart. If you can’t find what you’re looking for at the malls, you may want to check out the individual stores at The Market Common, Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing.

Christmas Shows

Myrtle Beach is home to many great theaters, and each of them will be putting on unique shows to get people in the holiday spirit. The Carolina Opry is bringing back “The Christmas Show Of The South” featuring a talented lineup of America’s Got Talent contestants, All That, as well as performances from Rita Gumm Calvin Gilmore himself and much more.

The Palace Theater will be hosting “Christmas Wonderland.” Their show features many memorable holiday songs, an outstanding dancing chorus, exciting figure skating and even a visit from Santa and his helpers.

Legends in Concert will have their super lineup of celebrity tribute artists putting on their unique version of a holiday show. You won’t want to miss performances from Elvis, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton, The Blues Brothers and more!

The Alabama Theater is bringing back “The South’s Grandest Christmas Show” once again! The talented cast of the Alabama Theater will be performing many of your favorite holiday tunes as well as some new tunes you’ll be sure to love. Get ready to laugh, sing and celebrate this season with the Alabama Theater.

Myrtle Beach Marathon

While it’s not holiday related, the Myrtle Beach Marathon is one of the biggest events in Myrtle Beach each winter. Being a qualifier for the Boston Marathon means that people from all over the country travel to participate in our event. Typically taking place over Valentine’s Day weekend, the Myrtle Beach Marathon draws thousands to the area for a fun, competitive experience. The 2016 Myrtle Beach Marathon will be taking place a little later than normal on March 3-5, with the actual race happening on Saturday the 5th.
