A Trip To Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle BeachDuring your next stay at Dunes Village, be sure to add Brookgreen Gardens to your itinerary.  Visitors both young and old can appreciate what Brookgreen has to offer. From immense gardens, to unique sculptures, to their very own zoo, Brookgreen Gardens has it all.

Directions

Brookgreen Gardens is located about 20 miles south of Dunes Village Resort in Murrells Inlet. As you turn off of the highway, the first thing to catch your eye will be the massive statue of the Fighting Stallions. As you take the drive down the main entrance road you’ll begin to leave the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach and become immersed in the beauty of the nature surrounding you.

The Gardens

The shining star of Brookgreen Gardens is, of course, the Gardens themselves. Over nine thousand acres of massive trees, plants, and flowers make up the Gardens, which were named in the Top 10 Public Gardens by Coastal Living.  No words can accurately describe the Gardens at Brookgreen. It is truly something that needs to be seen to understand.

The Sculptures

Brookgreen Gardens is also home to one of the most impressive collections of sculptures in the world. It features over 1,400 sculptures from over 350 sculptors dating from early 19th century up to today. This National Landmark is the first public sculpture garden in the United States, and has been accredited by the American Association of Museums.

The Zoo

As mentioned previously, Brookgreen Gardens is also home to The Lowcountry Zoo. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and houses animals that were either bred in captivity or suffered major injury preventing them from surviving in the wild. You’ll have a chance to see various species like alligators, foxes, bald eagles, deer, horses, sheep, and much more. Brookgreen’s Cypress Aviary is built over a cypress swamp and is home to many herons, egrets, mergansers and ibises.

The Butterfly Exhibit

If you visit between the months of April and October, the Butterfly House is a must-see at Brookgreen. Filled to the brim with tropical plants, the Whispering Wings exhibit has hundreds of butterflies flapping about. Here you can witness one of the most spectacular occurrences in nature, the maturation of a butterfly. A 30-minute admission to the exhibit costs $3 for adults and $2 for children.

So during your next stay at Dunes Village Resort, make sure Brookgreen Gardens makes it on your “to do” list. It’s a trip that surely won’t disappoint.
